Participants : J.Giordano, P.Perrier Collaborations : M. Brouillette, J.D. Parisse

Impementation of porous media in metrological systems

Participants : P.Perrier, I.Graur – Collaboration : Martin Wuest (INFICON, Liechtenstain) –Thèse/Post-doc : M.V. Johansson (thèse H2020 MIGRATE, 2016-2019)

The gas flows through the low permeable porous media are of great interest, especially in vacuum technology for filtering, separation processes, protection, and flow control. It can combine a high mass flow rate and a high level of rarefaction. The transient experimental technique developed previously for the mass flow rate measurements through the microchannels (Phys. Fluids, vol. 23, p. 031702, 2011) is generalized to obtain the permeability and conductance directly from the pressure variation measurements. The present experimental method- ology, allowing for step by step data verification, leads for higher accuracy than the similar and commonly used method such as “pulse-decay” techniques (Int. J. Rock. Mech. Min. Sci, vol. 5, no. 415-426, 1968). The measured data are fit- ted according to the exponential function with the pressure relaxation time as a single fitting parameter. The permeability and conductance of the sintered stainless-steel microporous medium are measured for different gases. By using the methodology proposed in (Int. J. Heat and Mass Trans., vol. 142, p. 118412, 2019) the characteristic pore size of the sample was determined to be equal to 1.5 micrometers. It was found that free molecular flow constant conductance is achieved at a pressure below 30 mbar for helium. This property makes this kind of porous media particularly suitable as a leak element by taking advantage of the constancy of conductance in the free molecular flow regime, for example, for calibration of ionization gauges or mass spectrometer (Measurement, vol. 45, no. 10, pp. 2452 – 2455, 2012).

This model is numerically implemented and afterwards it is validated in correlation with experimental data. Since some thermodynamic parameters and chemical coefficients are unknown for our surface kinetics the initial adsorption and desorption coefficients, Kads and Kdes, are derived from the experimental data. Afterwards predictions are achieved with a good level of correlation when calculating the retention time and peak width at the column outlet for an experimental sequence of several different column temperatures and inlet pressures; and comparing these values with the equivalent simulations.

Evaporation is one of the most effective processes for heat transfer enhancement in the confined spaces. The development of efficient tools for modeling of evaporation processes requires a clear understanding of the applicability of existing approaches. The planar evaporation of monoatomic gas at low and arbitrary evaporation speed (Mach number lower than 0.5) is simulated using the numerical solution of the S-model kinetic equation. These results are compared with the Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations available from literature and our simulations performed here using LAMMPS tools. The S-model kinetic equation is shown to be an excellent time-effective model to simulate the structure inside and beyond from the Knudsen layer. It is also shown that non-linear Moment Method (MM) of the solution of Boltzmann equation gives the results in good agreement with S-model and Molecular Dynamics data and it can be used for engineering applications when the heat flux in the gas phase above the Knudsen layer is negligible. The useful tool for evaporation rate calculation based on analytical Moment Method formulas is provided as well. It is shown that the well-known Schrage expression considerably overestimate the evaporation rates with the evaporation coefficients calculated using Molecular Dynamics approach. The provided results could be used as the benchmark data to test evaporation models.
