Harvesting solar energy in urban areas: From physical modeling to operational deployment

Martin Thebault – LOCIE, Le Bourget du Lac

The seminar will discuss some of the research activities regarding the multi-criteria and multi-scale integration of solar systems. It aims to cover topics ranging from the physical modeling of radiative phenomena and their coupling with the local thermal environment to the operational deployment of solar energy, integrating socio-economic factors. This approach considers the spatio-temporal variability of the solar resource at different spatial and temporal scales and resolutions, and its impact on the local thermal environment and solar systems performances. In most cases, large amounts of data (fields of temperature, irradiance, etc.) must be dealt with, and applied mathematics analyses are conducted using several approaches (PCA, clustering, regressions, deep learning) to better understand the underlying physics and phenomena. Finally, these researchs are intended to assist local stakeholders in planning and managing the energy transition in a sustainable and efficient manner.
